CIS-first invoicing
Frequent cash-linked work, clear UK language and a manual test using real invoices and remittances.
Broader search. Same commercial gate.
A cross-category UK shortlist built from software people already buy, narrowed to a workflow, niche or price wedge a small founder can validate before writing the full product.
Executive dashboard
The wider search adds six genuinely testable opportunities. It does not change the first recommendation: validate CIS-first invoicing, then add RAMS only after customer evidence. Commercial-cleaning proof and margin is the strongest new standalone option.
Recommended path
Start with CIS invoices and remittances. Add RAMS approval only after 40 paying customers, greater than 90% three-month gross logo retention and five paid RAMS design partners. Choose cleaning instead if you already have unusually good access to cleaning contractors.
Frequent cash-linked work, clear UK language and a manual test using real invoices and remittances.
Established HR spend and regulatory urgency, tempered by demand for advice rather than software.
Daily use, visible workarounds and a measurable contract-profitability outcome.
Comparison
Filter by category or decision. Competition scores higher when the field is more manageable. Self-storage is the lowest-scoring strong standalone and carries a stricter paid-validation gate.

Landscape coverage
The shortlist spans eight families. Other areas were screened and rejected when a low-cost UK entrant already occupied the obvious wedge, evidence was too thin or authorisation/technical load was too high.
Opportunity dossiers
Each dossier separates current evidence, commercial inference and the assumption that must be paid-tested.
CIS correct before the invoice leaves your phone.
Xero, QuickBooks, FreeAgent, Tradify, Powered Now and Joist charge for accounting, trade workflow or invoicing. HMRC’s MTD timetable reinforces digital records.
UK discussions repeat labour/material deduction confusion, reverse-charge wording, late remittances and overbuilt ledgers. The pain recurs whenever an invoice is paid.
Explicit labour/material lines, CIS/VAT preview, reviewed wording, remittance extraction with human review, gross/withheld/cash view and accountant export.
General ledgers serve accountants and many sectors; trade suites sell broader scheduling. This narrow cash-reconciliation flow can cannibalise add-ons.
Now: customer/job, quote-to-invoice, rule set, PDF/link, match/reminders/export. Later: bank feeds, receipts, portal and recognised HMRC filing.
£29 ARPA; 345 = £10,005. Reach accountants, merchants and trade groups. Medium-high tax/support exposure; low-medium MVP complexity.
Free bank bundles may be adequate, £29 may be too high and edge cases may require frequent accountant work.
Rebuild real work for 20 subcontractors. Require ten £29 payments, repeat use and two accountants clearing 30 scenarios.
Employment-law actions for under 50 staff. Transparent price. No advice contract.
BrightHR, Breathe, Peninsula, Citation and Croner sell software/advice. Current official implementation dates create a real trigger.
Users pay for records and help, while complaints recur around sales pressure, opaque bundles, long contracts, cancellation windows and renewal.
Dated obligation feed, named actions/evidence, employee clocks, policy/training acknowledgement and chronological export. Software-only; no case advice.
Advice, insurance and per-head expansion drive incumbent economics; a transparent narrow tracker weakens that model.
Now: timeline, clocks, tasks/evidence, reviewed templates, reminders/export. Later: integrations, advisers and insurance.
£79 ARPA; 127 = £10,033. Reach payroll bureaux, accountants and solicitors. One-to-four-week sale; high legal/support exposure.
Employers may require insured advice or distrust evidence from a young vendor; content work may erode margin.
Charge ten employers £79 for a solicitor-reviewed manual board. Require five renewals without advice included.
Prove every visit and know whether the contract paid.
CleanManager charges by role plus modules; a ten-worker setup with a module can exceed £170/month. Swept’s proof features sit above entry pricing and it has dozens of reviews.
Attendance, inspection and client evidence recur at every site. Reviews focus on time, inspections and messaging; mobile friction and module accumulation repeat.
Offline check-in/out, short checklist, photos, missed-visit alerts, multilingual instructions, client proof and budgeted-versus-actual hours.
Large suites optimise payroll, workforce breadth and estates; a flat-price proof layer for small contractors has lower expansion revenue.
Now: sites, rota, worker PIN, offline time, proof, exceptions, report and margin/export. Later: payroll, routes, consumables and portals.
£79 ARPA; 127 = £10,033. Reach directories, suppliers and local firms. Daily retention; medium support, GDPR and offline-sync load.
WhatsApp may be sufficient, payroll may be table stakes or cleaners may not adopt the check-in.
Five firms, three live sites each, four weeks. Require 80% capture without office repair and evidence used with clients.
Today’s jobs, approvals and invoices—without an ERP.
Garage Hive starts around £145/month; richer workshop systems cost more. Great Britain recorded 22,448 active MOT stations in 2024–25.
Practitioners describe complicated, costly or foreign-market tools; paper diary, invoices and WhatsApp photos remain a common workaround.
Fast day-board, vehicle history, voice notes/photos, approval link, estimate-to-invoice and service/MOT reminders.
Modules, seats and integrations drive retention and revenue; a shallow tier for tiny garages offers less ARPA.
Now: records, board, job card, estimate/approval, invoice, reminder, import/export. Later: DVSA/VRM, parts, stock and booking.
£69; 145 = £10,005. Reach via garage visits, factors and MOT trainers. High retention; migration/support heavy.
Parts, DVSA or accounting integration may be required before switching; history import may destroy CAC.
Import a real week for five garages and operate in parallel for four weeks before production integrations.
The commercial pest report and route book for a five-tech firm.
PestPac, FieldRoutes, GorillaDesk and Jobber cover scheduling, pest reports, product records and billing; review volumes and paid use are substantial.
Operators say CRMs become essential, yet cheap tools feel dated, generic FSM misses pest work and specialist suites can be expensive or overfeatured.
Recurring visits, site/bait-point history, product/action log, photos/signature, recommendations, next visit and clean customer report.
Large suites serve bigger fleets and US billing breadth; a small UK commercial-report workflow lowers ARPA.
Now: sites, visits, schedule, activity/product log, proof, report, reminder/export. Later: routes, stock, sensors and portal.
£79; 127 = £10,033. Reach trade directories, suppliers and trainers. Excellent recurring retention; medium offline and record-risk load.
Existing tools may be adequate or route optimisation may be table stakes; reporting may vary by service type.
Observe 30 visits across five firms; require five paid pilots and technicians completing reports without office repair.
Get RAMS approved and signed—not merely generated.
HandsHQ, RAMs App and HS Direct charge for content, COSHH, training, approvals and signatures. Reviews confirm time saved versus Word/Excel.
The costly loop is submit, comment, revise, reissue, brief and prove the current version was seen. Generic/AI documents can be rejected or unsafe.
Import existing documents, site-specific cover, comments by section, version comparison, old-link invalidation, QR acknowledgement and audit export.
Proprietary content libraries drive incumbent value; arbitrary-document approval weakens that lock-in.
Now: upload, review, states, versions, sign-off, worker register/export. Later: authoring, COSHH, integrations and completeness checks.
£39; 257 = £10,023, or £59 with CIS. Shared trade channels; good retention but high support/liability exposure.
Principal-contractor portals may dominate; users may expect content; insurance may be uneconomic.
Process 20 real approval loops; require five paid subcontractors and three external reviewers preferring the trail.
Open-ended hire, weekly bill, clean hand-back.
Booqable starts around £29–£35 and reports 1,000+ reviews; HireHop offers free and £46 professional tiers; larger rental suites charge more.
UK users describe Excel, variable weekly rates, extension/turnaround needs and tools that technically work but miss the actual hire process.
On-hire-until-called-off state, weekly runs, delivery/handover evidence, off-hire, collection, damage/shortage and service due.
Broad products optimise online booking or complex inventories; low-volume operational hire is a smaller segment.
Now: assets, availability, contract, delivery/return, evidence, weekly billing, damage/deposit/export. Later: barcodes, payments, telematics and multi-depot.
£79; 127 = £10,033. Reach directories, suppliers and associations. High retention after migration; medium-high support.
Booqable/HireHop configuration may solve it, free plans anchor price or e-commerce becomes mandatory.
Run 20 live hires for five firms; require three £79 payments and measurable weekly billing/return improvement.
Every case due, every bench hand-off, every remake visible.
Transactor LabManager, LabStar, Evident, GreatLab and Seazona sell case, technician, invoice and compliance workflow.
Discussions describe spreadsheets failing with volume, heavy systems, outages, handwritten tickets, missed dates, remakes and weekend invoicing.
Due/stage/owner board, QR hand-offs, dentist status link, remake reason and invoice-ready completion. No clinical interpretation.
Mature suites expand into CAD/scanner, accounting and analytics; small labs can be underserved by depth and migration.
Now: intake, due/stage, bench, QR, notes/photos, dispatch, status, remake and invoice/export. Later: courier, CAD/scanner, portal and inventory.
£79; 127 = £10,033. Reach associations, suppliers and direct demos. Exceptional embedded retention; high data security and onboarding load.
Scanner integration may be essential, dentists may not use status links or the reachable niche may be too small.
Track 100 cases for five labs. Require three paid pilots, remakes included and fewer case-location interruptions.
Licensed small-dog care, without kennel software.
Gingr has 200+ reviews and $95–$150 plans; Revelation Pets and KennelBooker have substantial review histories and lower entry prices.
Users report freezes, inaccurate reports, dated interfaces, support/migration pain and poor sibling, occupancy, vaccine and approval workflows.
Household-aware booking, licensed capacity, vaccine blocks, trial suitability, medication/behaviour/incidents, agreement and inspection export.
GOV.UK requires visible, backed-up records retained three years, daily behaviour monitoring and adherence to licensed dog numbers.
Now: owners/dogs, capacity, vaccine, trial, care/medication, incident, agreement/deposit/export. Later: portal, payments, rota and accounting.
£59; 170 = £10,030. Reach public licence lists, insurers and trainers. High retention; medium support and privacy burden.
Existing products may fit, very small businesses may reject £59 or operators may refuse parallel data entry.
Ten interviews and four paid full-cycle pilots. Require capacity/vaccine/care use with no duplicate paper.
Strong standalone, strict gate: rent and arrears for the 20–80-unit yard.
Stora, Storeganise, 6Storage and SiteLink are established; StoreBay now charges £63 plus VAT for 50 units. Demand is proven and competition is direct.
Operators describe invoice/payment re-entry, notices, failed-card retries, billing after switching and spreadsheets. Others say free tools are enough.
Unit/tenant ledger, hosted recurring payments, controlled retries, notice timeline, arrears queue, agreement, deposit and move-out evidence.
Large suites prefer bigger sites and add-ons. However, StoreBay and Boxli may already occupy the small UK wedge—this is the key uncertainty.
Now: ledger, agreement, schedule, reconciliation, retry/notices, receipts and export. Later: bookings, access, insurance and multi-site.
£49; 205 = £10,045. High potential retention; medium-high payment/GDPR/support complexity.
StoreBay, Boxli or free CCStorage may remove the gap; small sites may never accept paid software.
No build unless five UK sites pay £49, three switch and arrears benefit exceeds three times the fee.
Revenue scenarios
Counts exclude VAT, payment fees, discounts, churn and support. They show the required account shape rather than forecast market share.

Low-cost validation
Run one category at a time. Complaints, survey enthusiasm and free waitlists do not clear the gate; observed workflows, target-price payments and repeat use do.
Code 100 current review fragments by job, frequency, workaround, consequence and switch reason.
3 days · under £100Interview 20 niche operators and inspect at least five recent real artefact/workflow sets.
7 days · £100–£300Run outcome-led versus price-led landing pages. Count booked reviews or deposits, not emails.
7 days · £150–£400Deliver the result manually with forms, spreadsheets and PDFs; charge target price for 14–30 days.
£100–£600Method & limitations
Official sources establish rules and counts; vendors establish advertised features and public prices; reviews and discussions expose work. None substitutes for paid customer discovery.
Desk research dated 6 August 2026. Narrow UK B2B feedback is sparse; review indexing is incomplete; vendor savings claims are not audited; pricing changes. New products prove competition, not durable demand. No market size or uptake is fabricated. Scores are judgement summaries rather than probabilities.
“All categories” means a systematic cross-category screen, not every possible SIC code. Fire/PAT certificates, waste notes, F-gas, funeral, aesthetics, agriculture, auctions, HGV compliance and several inspection tools were screened but not retained because obvious wedges were crowded, low-priced or technically/regulatorily heavier.
